INITIAL DONATIONS
Kids Safe Zone Daycare in Lam Gaen, Thailand
With the help of the Canada Fund – Thailand (an arm of the Thai Canadian Embassy) we were made aware of the initiatives of We Love Thailand (http://www.welovethailand.in.th), a local Thai NGO. We Love Thailand is committed to helping tsunami survivors rebuild their livelihoods, and part of that initiative is to build daycares in a number of villages that were directly impacted by the tsunami.
Rubina Hope for Kids will be specifically supporting the Kids Safe Zone Daycare in Lam Gaen, Phang Nga. Funds donated from Rubina Hope for Kids will go towards the construction as well as operating costs of this particular daycare.
Update!(April 1st, 2006)
Daycare Status
The daycare is now complete! The Lam Gaen Kids Safe Zone Daycare opened its doors on April 1st, 2006 and has the capacity to serve 35-45 children. A small plaque will reside in the daycare, with a short explanation of Rubina and the support Rubina Hope for Kids provided. If anyone, who is heading over to Thailand, is interested in visiting the daycare please do not hesitate to contact us and we can provide you with the location of the daycare.

Educational Scholarships
Phuket International Women’s Club, or PIWC (http://www.phuket.com/piwc/) , is a non-profit organization. They have been providing educational scholarships to children, youth and young adults, as to date have provided over 250 students. After the tsunami they turned their attention to those who suffered directly from the tragedy. Rubina Hope for Kids will be directly sponsoring primary and secondary school children by providing them with scholarships. These scholarships not only pay for the children’s school fees but will also go towards uniforms, school supplies and lunch supplements.
(March, 2006)
Money has been transferred over PIWC and we are currently sponsoring the education of two Thai children. Below are their stories:
Soponvit Jaturong (5 year old boy)
Soponvit currently lives with his single mother under someone else’s roof because they are unable to afford their accommodation. Soponvit’s mother is in poor health and works in the market selling iced coffee and doing laundry. Although Soponovit and his mother were deeply traumatize by the tsunami because they were caught in the wave and dragged under water, they have been unable to receive aid from the government because they are registered as living outside of the tsunami affected region. Soponvit attends Baan Nam Kam School and requires 8000 baht a year to cover all expenses.
Ourairat Doysee (14 year old girl)
Ourairat comes from a fishing family and lives on Koh Kao island. She lives with her Auntie and Uncle. The Uncle is a fisherman and has experienced a decline in income since the wave hit. She currently attends Baan Nam Kam School. Since Baan Nam School is on the mainland, in Koh Lak, she must take a boat and bus to school. She has requested assistance of 270 baht a month for transportation costs.
